GradSWE at Illinois hosted its third annual weSTEM (Women Empowered in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Conference on Saturday, February 7th, 2015. Held at the iHotel and Conference Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the flagship event of the GradSWE group brought together over 120 graduate students from across the country and over 25 disciplines as well as nearly 20 accomplished professionals with advanced degrees.
The event provided an opportunity for current and future STEM leaders to share their experiences and encourage each other to pursue their passions to advance the scientific frontier and answer society’s toughest challenges.
The conference highlighted diversity – both in the backgrounds, disciplines, and current stage of speakers and attendees and also in the career paths available to STEM advanced degree holders. This variety energized the conference, exposing students and speakers to all that is possible with STEM degrees beyond their individual area of expertise.
The day was full of activity (Schedule) and was widely praised by attendees:
“It was an excellent conference and a great opportunity for women in STEM and others who are passionate about this community.”
“There are a lot of good conversations that need to happen that happen at weSTEM.”
“It a unique experience for graduate students that you cannot find anywhere else.”
